I'm 1 term into Math Extension and i'm partially struggling, partially not. I think the investigation assessment task really put me off. Any advice on whether i should keep it for year 12? Does it really scale well and does it really make advanced easier?
Generally speaking, people who do Maths Extension end up finding Advanced easier. It also usually scales quite higher than Advanced.
My advice would be to wait until you've completed more year 11 assessments/exams for Extension and based on your results, make a final decision about whether you will keep or drop Extension for year 12.
It's only the first exam. I'd say wait for the yearly's since I had a friend who did quite bad in Task 1 and Task 2 and then aced the Yearly's and now doing Extension 2 Mathematics. There's nothing to lose as well, if you end up dropping it, your Advanced is strengthened anyways. Last resort option and extreme case, if Extension 1 is seriously affecting your schedule and wasting so much time that you are losing this time for your other subjects, then its advisable to drop.
Don't fret, Maths Extension 1 usually is tedious in year 11. But in year 12, if you think about it... There's only 3.5-4 extra chapters to be covered in the curriculum for Extension 1 in addition to the amount of chapters there are in 2 Unit. Basically you'd be spending your entire year 12 doing just 4 extra chapters and a few subsections in the 2U chapters of math + having quite a few extra study periods! I'd say keep it and just grind through year 11. Year 12 is much more manageable!!
